Situated in the highly fertile Ganga-Yamuna Doab region, Muzaffarnagar is known as the“Sugar Bowl of India” because of its large-scale sugarcane production. The district has one of Asia’s largest jaggery markets and possesses a strong agriculture-based economy. Under the One District One Cuisine Programme, Gur, Chaat Tikki, and Peda have been selected for Muzaffarnagar district.

Muzaffarnagar’s Roasted Peda is a traditional milk-based sweet known for its rich, caramelised flavour and distinctive roasted edges. Prepared with khoya and carefully roasted to develop a deeper colour and slightly smoky aroma, it is traditionally enhanced with desi ghee and aromatic flavours such as cardamom and saffron. Its deep, roasted character gives this peda a distinctive taste and appearance.

Muzaffarnagar’s long-established sugarcane economy gave rise to one of India’s most celebrated jaggery traditions. Fresh sugarcane juice is clarified and slowly boiled in large iron pans until it develops a rich golden-brown colour and earthy sweetness. Awarded a GI tag in 2023, Muzaffarnagar Jaggery represents the district’s agricultural heritage and generations of skilled craftsmanship.

Muzaffarnagar’s Chaat (Tikki) is a popular street food known for its extra-crispy potato tikki and a delicious blend of tangy, spicy, and sweet flavours. Made with seasoned mashed potatoes shaped into flat patties and shallow-fried on a tawa until golden and crunchy, it is served with flavourful chutneys and toppings. The crisp texture and bold combination of flavours make it a favourite local delicacy of Muzaffarnagar.
