Once the glorious capital of King Harshavardhana, Kannauj is today renowned worldwide as the“Perfume City of India.” Natural perfumes are prepared here from sandalwood and various flowers using a centuries-old traditional hydro-distillation method. Under the One District One Cuisine Programme, Gatta Mithai and Khoya Peda have been selected for Kannauj district.

Kannauj’s Gatta Mithai is especially popular in the rural markets of Tirwa, Chhibramau, Gursahaiganj, and Kannauj city. Traditionally prepared using sugarcane juice and jaggery, it is widely enjoyed during winter, local fairs, and festivals. Its earthy sweetness and traditional preparation have made it a distinctive part of Kannauj’s culinary heritage.

Kannauj’s Khoya Peda is famous in Makrand Nagar, Tirwa, Gursahaiganj, and the old sweet shops of Kannauj city. Khoa prepared from milk sourced from local dairies is cooked over a low flame. Its pleasant aroma, soft texture, and balanced sweetness make it distinctive.
