Jalaun is a historic district situated in the Jhansi Division of Uttar Pradesh, with its administrative headquarters at Orai. It is an important part of the Bundelkhand region and is surrounded by the Yamuna, Betwa, and Pahuj rivers. Jalaun city is a municipality and was formerly a residence of Maratha rulers. The district’s principal crops include wheat, gram, peas, and mustard. Kalpi and Konch are its two major cities. Under the One District One Cuisine Programme, Rasgulla and Gujiya have been selected for Jalaun district.

It is said that approximately 50–70 years ago, some Halwais who had worked in eastern India, particularly in the Bengal region, began preparing Rasgulla in Orai. People greatly appreciated its completely new taste, and the sweet became extremely popular while gradually adapting to the local style. Rasgullas are available throughout the year, but their demand and production increase during festivals such as Diwali and Holi and during the wedding season.

Jalaun’s traditional Mawa and Semolina Gujiya is famous throughout Bundelkhand for its crispy outer layer and flavourful dry-fruit filling. More than 7,000 people are employed across over 3,000 units engaged in this industry.
