Deoria is an important district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, known for its fertile agricultural land and the production of sugarcane, paddy, and wheat. The district also has special religious significance. The Deoraha Temple and nearby historical and cultural sites enrich its identity. An agriculture-based economy is one of Deoria’s principal features. Under the One District One Cuisine Programme, Malpua, Dahi-Chura, Gur ki Jalebi, and Litti-Chokha have been selected for Deoria district.

Litti-Chokha is a popular traditional dish of Deoria. Litti filled with Sattu is cooked over a low flame and served with Chokha prepared from brinjal, potatoes, and tomatoes. Its traditional indigenous taste represents the food culture of Purvanchal, and it is extremely popular among local residents.

Malpua is a traditional sweet of Deoria. It is prepared from a batter of refined flour, milk, and sugar and fried in ghee. Its flavour is further enhanced after it is immersed in sugar syrup. Malpua is specially prepared and enjoyed during festivals, fairs, and religious functions. More than 150 people are employed across over 50 units engaged in this industry.

Dahi-Chura is a traditional and nutritious food of Deoria and the Purvanchal region. It is prepared by mixing Chura or flattened rice with fresh curd. Jaggery, sugar, or banana may also be added in some places. Because it is simple, easily digestible, and flavourful, it is popular both as an everyday meal and on special occasions.

Gur ki Jalebi is a popular traditional sweet of Deoria. It is prepared using jaggery syrup instead of sugar syrup, which gives it a distinctive taste and aroma. Its crispy texture and indigenous sweetness make it particularly popular during winter, at fairs, and in local markets. More than 500 people are employed across over 100 units engaged in this industry.
