Chitrakoot is an extremely sacred religious destination where Lord Shri Ram, Mata Sita, and Lakshman are believed to have spent more than 11 years of their exile. Situated on the banks of the Mandakini River, the district is rich in sacred sites such as Kamadgiri Mountain, Ramghat, Janaki Kund, and Sphatik Shila. Under the One District One Cuisine Programme, Mawa has been selected for Chitrakoot district.

Chitrakoot’s Mawa is primarily prepared in Chitrakoot Dham—Karwi—Sitapur, Manikpur, and Rajapur. Based on the dairy production of the Bundelkhand region, this Mawa is prepared by cooking pure milk for an extended period. It is used to prepare Peda, Barfi, Kalakand, and various other sweets. It is extremely popular among devotees visiting Chitrakoot Dham.
