Located at the easternmost edge of Uttar Pradesh, Ballia is known as“Baghi Ballia” because, during the Quit India Movement of 1942, an independent government was established here for a few days under the leadership of Chittu Pandey. The district is also famous for the Dadri Cattle Fair and the confluence of the Ganga and Ghaghara rivers. Under the One District One Cuisine Programme, Sattu Aadharit Utpad and Bati-Chokha have been selected for Ballia district.

Ballia’s traditional Sattu is prepared by roasting and finely grinding gram. Known for its earthy flavour and nutritional value, it is commonly enjoyed as a refreshing drink and used as a filling in traditional dishes. Sattu has long been an important part of Ballia’s everyday food culture and local identity.

This traditional dish consists of wheat Bati served with Chokha prepared from brinjal, potatoes, and tomatoes. It is prepared as an everyday meal in households throughout Ballia. Bati-Chokha represents the district’s rural food culture and attracts people in India and abroad because of its taste and simplicity.
